Wine Companion installation instructions (General)
These instructions will install the Wine Companion and Wine
Organiser programs onto your computer. The 'Wine Companion'
is the main program which runs from the CD-ROM. The 'Wine
Organiser' is your personal cellar holdings and tasting
notes management program which is included as part of the
overall Wine Companion CD-ROM program. The 'Wine Organiser'
can be accessed from the contents screen in the Wine
Companion CD-ROM or run as a separate program from your hard
disk after installation. It requires about 20Mb of hard disk
space to install.
After installation previous CD-ROM owners (1997 or 1998
editions) can import their existing tasting notes and cellar
holdings into the Wine Organiser program (see
instructions).Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11
users need to install Win32s before they can run the 'Wine
Organiser' (see instructions).
To install the Wine Companion - Windows 95/NT
1. Select Run from the pop-up Start menu.
2. Type D:\install.exe (where D is your CD-ROM drive) and
click OK or press enter to start the installation program.
This will install the 'Wine Organiser' program on your hard
disk, and icons for it in your start menu.
3. To run the Wine Companion, choose the 'Wine Companion'
found in the Programs section of your Start menu.
4. To run the Wine Organiser on its own, choose the 'Wine
Organiser' found in the Programs section of your Start menu.
Alternatively double click the 'Wine Organiser' icon located
in the folder you specified during installation.
Please note:
Ñ If running the Wine Organiser from the CD-ROM the first
time you use it you may get the following prompt: "The date
and time formats associated with 'Vintages.WOR' are
different than the current system settings. Do you wish to
use the system setting for data entry?" Please click on yes.
This will ensure your system settings remain the same.
Ñ To run the Wine Companion without installing the Wine
Organiser run wine.exe. However if you have not installed
the Wine Organiser and try to access it through the CD-ROM
you will be asked to locate the program. Please then exit
and follow the above installation instructions.
To install the Wine Companion - Windows 3.1 or Windows for
Workgroups 3.11
If you are running Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups
3.11 then you must install Win32s first to enable you to use
the 'Wine Organiser' component of the Wine Companion CD-ROM.
To install Win32s:
1. Open the Control Panel and then the 386 Enhanced. Change
the virtual memory type to Permanent.
2. Make sure the swap file size is at least 20480 KB.
3. Select 'Use 32-Bit Disk Access' and 'Use 32-Bit File
Access' if available.
4. If any changes were made in steps 1-3 then you must
restart Windows before installing Win32s. Do this now.
5. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. In the Program
Manager select File and then Run from the pull down menu.
6. Type D:\win32s\setup.exe (where D is your CD-ROM drive)
and click OK. Follow the onscreen prompts.
7. When the Win32s installation is complete, the Freecell
set up dialogue box will appear. We recommend that you
install the game Freecell as it will verify that the Win32s
software has been installed correctly.
8. Restart Windows as instructed. You are now ready to
install the Wine Companion software.
To install Wine Companion CD-ROM:
1. Choose Run from the File menu (Manager) in the Program
Manager.
2. Type D:\install.exe (where D is your CD-ROM drive) and
click OK or press enter to start the setup program. This
will install icons in a new group in your Program Manager.
3. Double click on the Wine Companion icon and the program
will start automatically.
Please note:
Ñ The first time you run the Wine Organiser from the CD-ROM
you may be asked to locate the Wine Organiser program. Click
on the Wine Organiser icon on the Contents screen. A Dialog
box may ask you to locate the Wine Organiser on your hard
disk. Click OK. In the Window which has appeared, find the
Wine Organiser folder which was saved to your hard disk
during installation. Locate and open the file
'wine_org.exe'. You should only need to do this once. If you
did not run the installer click 'Cancel' and follow the Wine
Companion installation instructions to install the Wine
Organiser program.
QuickTime 2.1.2 Installation (Windows only)
To view video in the 'About wine' section of the Wine
Companion requires QuickTime 2.1.2 to be installed on your
computer. If you are unsure whether you have QuickTime
installed, select the Install QuickTime icon from the Wine
Companion folder or group. This will check for previous
versions and replace them. To install follow the QuickTime
for Windows prompts on screen.
In the Program Group (W3.1 and W3.11 users) or Start menu
(W95 and WinNT users) you will see an Uninstall icon which
will allow you to remove the program files and icons from
your hard disk, however this will not remove QuickTime for
Windows.
Please note: The existing versions check in the QuickTime
installation should be completed as old or multiple version
of QuickTime can cause unpredictable results.
To install the Wine Companion - Macintosh
1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and the CD-ROM
will automatically appear on the desktop.
2. Copy the 'Wine-drag to hard disk folder' from the CD-ROM
to your hard disk.
3. To run the Wine Companion, double click the Wine
Companion icon in the CD-ROM and the program will start
automatically.
4. To run the Wine Organiser you can open the file you
copied onto your hard disk. When accessing the Wine
Organiser program from the CD-ROM for the first time, you
will be asked to locate the Wine Organiser program. To
locate the Wine Organiser program find the 'Wine-drag to
hard disk folder' by going to your desktop and opening the
hard disk. Locate the folder named 'Wine-drag to hard disk'
which is the copy you made earlier. Open the folder and
double click on the Wine Organiser program. If you
accidentally open the wrong program, you will get the
following message "Opening Vintages.WOR as read only. The
file was locked, and you will not be able to make changes".
If this occurs you will need to remove the preferences file
from your system, see below for information.
How to remove the preferences file
Only perform this operation if you have chosen the wrong
'Wine Organiser' program from within the 'Wine
Companion'.This will clear your preferences and you will be
asked to locate the 'Wine Organiser' program next time you
choose to run it from the 'Wine Companion'.
1. Quit the 'Wine Organiser' program.
2. Locate the preferences file. This file is found in the
C:\Windows\ folder (most Windows users), or C:\WinNT
(Windows NT users), or the Preferences folder inside your
System Folder (Macintosh users). The file is called WineJH99
(all Windows users) or Wine JH 1999 (Macintosh users).
3. Delete this file or drag it to the Trash. Next time you
run the 'Wine Organiser' from the 'Wine Companion' program,
you will be asked to locate the 'Wine Organiser' program,
please follow the above instructions.
Importing and exporting tasting notes from the Wine
Organiser
The Wine Organiser allows you to share tasting notes with
other Wine Organiser owners.
Import tasting notes from another user
To import tasting notes from a floppy disk:
1. Click the import button.
2. At the bottom of the dialog box there is a popup menu
(Mac) or drop down box (Windows) which allows you to select
the file type. Select the type 'Tab-Separated Text'. (After
your first import or export it should remember the setting
for you.)
3. Locate the tasting note file you wish to import from the
floppy disk.
We have suggested windows users may type"A:\myexport.txt" to
save it to their A-drive floppy as filename 'myexport.txt'.
Export author tasting notes
To export your tasting notes to a floppy disk:
1. If you wish to export tasting notes for a particular
author then select the author from the Author field, or
clear the field to export all tasting notes. (This is useful
if you have already imported a friend's tasting notes, and
you don't want to give him duplicates of his own notes).
2. Click the export button.
3. At the bottom of the dialog box there is a popup menu
(Mac)or drop down box (Windows) which allows you to select
the file type. Select the type 'Tab-Separated Text' item.
(After your first import or export, it should remember this
setting for you.)
4. Type a file name to hold the exported tasting notes
(windows users should end the file name with ".txt") and
save the file to a floppy disk.
A suggestion: to identify your tasting note files for other
users, Windows users may type - A:\myexport.txt to import
file name 'myexport.txt' from their A drive floppy).
Importing James Halliday's tasting notes
It is intended to include new James Halliday tasting notes
on his web site which you can download into the Wine
Organiser. To ensure you receive further information please
fill in the CD-ROM evaluation form and return it to
HarperCollinsPublishers or visit his web site at
http://www.jameshalliday.com.au
Important notes
Ñ You should not rename the files installed for the 'Wine
Organiser' (those ending with .WOR), otherwise the 'Wine
Organiser' will not function correctly.
Ñ When importing or exporting tasting notes to share with
your other 'Wine Companion' CD owners, always choose or type
'Tab-Separated Text' in the save and open dialog boxes.
After your first import and export, this item should
remember this setting for you.
Backing-up your files
We highly recommend that you backup all your files
regularly. In particular, you should backup the following
files:
Cellar.fp3
Tastings.fp3
Vintages.fp3
Wines.fp3
Wineries.fp3
Upgrade.fp3
VarClass.fp3
Working.fp3
W_Styles.fp3
Wine_org.exe (Wine Organiser for Macintosh users)
To back-up your Wine Organiser cellar holding records and
tasting notes make a copy of the Wine Organiser folder and
store separately (saved in a safe place).
Printing problems
There are known incompatibilities between the Hewlett
Packard LaserJet 5 and 6 printers and the 'Wine Organiser'
software. If you own one of these printers and wish to print
your cellar holdings or tasting notes, we recommend using
the LJIII (3) printer driver with your printer, as a
work-around.
Previous CD-ROM Owners
(For owners of the 1997 or 1998 Wine Companion CD-ROM only.)
If you own previous edition/s of the Wine Companion CD-ROM
you are able to import your existing cellar holdings and
tasting notes in the new Wine Organiser database.
The Wine Organiser is a more sophisticated database and has
been developed according to your feedback. We have tried to
ensure that your most valuable information imports easily
into the new program, however to facilitate the new wine by
vintage format we have not been able to transfer the style,
winery or wine region fields as this information is now
included in the wine name and automatic wine region fields.
Unfortunately because of an incompatibility problem between
file formats, the present value and purchase price fields of
your cellar holdings will be altered slightly. The new
program is only reading 3 digits of your dollar value, for
example a $15.95 will become $15.90, or a $110.50 wine will
become $110.00. We apologise for the inconvenience, however
you are able to go into your records and alter them to
correct the problem.
Please go the your user guide for more information on
editing details and cross linking your wines with James
Halliday.
Windows users: Double click on the 'Upgrade Cellar and
Tasting Notes' icon or choose it from your 'Start' menu and
follow the instructions below. If the 'Upgrade.WOR' file
won't open, drag the file to the Wine Organiser program and
open it this way.
Macintosh users: Locate the 'Wine-drag to hard disk folder'
Organiser Folder you copied onto your hard disk and double
click on the Prepare for Upgrade program. This will make
your existing cellar holdings and tasting notes visible so
they can be imported. Double click on the 'Upgrade.WOR' file
and follow the steps below. If the 'Upgrade.WOR' file won't
open, drag the file to the Wine Organiser program and open
it this way.
To import your Cellar Holdings
1. Click on the 'Import Previous Cellar' button. A dialog
box will appear asking you to choose to show only the DBF
files from the menu and then to locate your cellar holdings
file. Press OK to continue.
2. At the bottom of the window that appeared, select the
'DBF' item from the drop down box (Windows) or the pop-up
menu (Mac).
3. Navigate through your folders to your 'C:\Windows\'
folder (Windows) or your 'Preferences' folder inside your
'System Folder' (Mac).
4. Locate and open the file called 'Winecllr.dbf'.
5. The Wine Organiser will now import your cellar holdings.
To import your Tasting Notes
1. Click on the 'Import Previous Tasting Notes' button. A
dialog box will appear asking you to choose to show only the
DBF files from the menu and then to locate your tasting
notes file. Press OK to continue.
2. At the bottom of the window that appeared, select the
'DBF' item from the drop down box (Windows) or the pop-up
menu (Mac).
3. Navigate through your folders to your 'C:\Windows\'
folder (Windows) or your 'Preferences' folder inside your
'System Folder' (Mac).
4. Locate and open the file called 'Winetast.dbf'.
5. The Wine Organiser will now import your cellar holdings.
When you have completed both imports, click the 'Done'
button to exit. You may now open the Wine Organiser that
will contain your previous records.
What to do if a message suggests that you contact the
developers
Power failures and system crashes can damage Wine Organiser
files (when they are open). If this happens, when you run
the Wine Organiser you will be informed to contact the
developer. Contrary to the message, in most cases this is
not necessary. Instead, quit and rerun the Wine Organiser
and immediately press and hold the 'Ctrl' and 'Shift' keys
(Windows users) or the 'Option' and 'Command'* keys
(Macintosh). The Wine Organiser will attempt to recover the
damaged files. Keep holding the keys down until you see the
'Recover File' dialog box.
* The command key is also known as the 'Apple' key
During recovery the corrupted files will be renamed with the
word 'old' appended to the file name. The repaired files are
given the original names. If recovery was successful you
will now be able to run the Wine Organiser application. If
so, you may throw away the 'old' files from the folder.
If recovery fails to rectify the problem then you will
should restore a backup set made previously (which is a
highly recommended practise). The files from the backup set
MUST have the same file names as they were created with. (If
you have renamed them in the backup process you must restore
their names before running the Wine Organiser application).
If you are unable to restore from a backup set of files, you
must reinstall the Wine Companion from the CD. Your personal
Cellar Holdings and Tasting Notes will be lost.
